Cypriot Citizenship

1. Obtaining Cyprus Citizenship by Naturalization

To be entitled to apply for Cyprus citizenship through naturalization, an EU citizen or third-country national must have resided for a minimum of 7 years (2555 days) legally in Cyprus, of which the year preceding the date of application should be full and uninterrupted. If the applicant is either the parent or child of a Cypriot citizen, the time required is five years instead of seven.

2. Obtaining Cyprus Citizenship due to marriage with a Cypriot National

Those who are married to Cypriot citizens are eligible to obtain citizenship after three years of marriage and two years of residency in the Cyprus Republic prior to the date of application. Eligible parties are also spouses who live abroad after they have completed at least three years of marriage with Cypriots. These applications must additionally be accompanied by a letter from the couple stating the reasons for requesting the grant of Cypriot citizenship to the foreign spouse. If the couple has completed at least five years of marriage and has at least one child, it is not necessary to attach the aforementioned letter.

3. Obtaining Cyprus Citizenship due to Cypriot origins

A person can obtain Cyprus citizenship due to Cypriot origins as long as he or she satisfies certain criteria. There are different application forms depending on the age, origin, and date of birth of the candidate. Inter alia, an individual who was born after 1960 will be eligible to apply for Cypriot citizenship if his or her father was a Cypriot citizen at the time of his or her birth. For those born after 1999, they can apply for Cypriot citizenship if their mother was a Cypriot citizen at the date of his or her birth as well.
